A refined surimono woodblock print by Ryūryūkyo Shinsai, featuring a minimalist arrangement of sake cups and calligraphy.
This woodblock print by Ryūryūkyo Shinsai belongs to the genre of surimono, which were privately commissioned prints often exchanged among members of poetry circles. Shinsai was a pupil of Katsushika Hokusai, and his work frequently displays the refined aesthetic sensibilities common to the Edo period literati. The composition features a selection of sake cups and a tall vessel, arranged with a deliberate sense of negative space that draws the eye to the subtle textures and colours of the objects.
The print incorporates calligraphic inscriptions, which are integral to the surimono format. These poems often reference seasonal themes or specific cultural events, such as the New Year celebrations implied by the title. The use of colour is restrained, focusing on the warm, earthy tones of the lacquerware cups contrasted against the stark, linear form of the tall vessel. The application of pigment is precise, reflecting the high standards of the woodblock carving and printing techniques of the time.
Shinsai demonstrates a mastery of balance in this piece. By placing the objects in a sparse arrangement, he invites the viewer to contemplate the individual forms rather than a crowded scene. The inclusion of the red lacquer accents provides a small, controlled burst of colour that anchors the composition. This print serves as an example of the sophisticated, understated art produced for private distribution in early 19th-century Japan. The paper texture and the delicate lines of the calligraphy remain clear, preserving the original intent of the artist and the printer. It is a quiet, contemplative work that captures a moment of traditional celebration through the lens of refined material culture.
