Sakanoshita: Peak of Fudesute Mountain - Utagawa Hiroshige

A classic woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige from his famous Tokaido series, depicting the dramatic Fudesute Mountain and a roadside teahouse.

This woodblock print is part of the celebrated series, Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido, published by Hoeido. Utagawa Hiroshige depicts the forty-eighth station, Sakanoshita, situated at the base of the Suzuka Pass. The composition focuses on the dramatic, jagged silhouette of Fudesute Mountain, which looms over the travellers below. The name of the mountain, Fudesute, translates to 'discarding the brush', a reference to the legend that the scenery is so magnificent that artists find their own skills inadequate and abandon their tools in frustration.

Hiroshige employs a distinct spatial arrangement, separating the foreground plateau from the distant peaks with a layer of mist. On the right, a teahouse provides a resting place for weary travellers, while a man leads a pack animal along the narrow path below. The artist balances the rugged, dark forms of the mountain with the soft, atmospheric gradient of the sky, which transitions from a pale orange to a deep blue. The use of colour is restrained, relying on subtle washes to define the depth of the valley and the texture of the rock faces.

As a master of the Ukiyo-e tradition, Hiroshige captures the intersection of human activity and the natural environment. The print reflects the popularity of travel during the Edo period, when the Tokaido road served as the primary artery between Edo and Kyoto. This work demonstrates the artist's ability to synthesise observation with poetic interpretation, creating a view that is both topographical and evocative. The fine lines of the foliage and the precise rendering of the architectural elements show the technical skill involved in the carving and printing process. This piece remains a primary example of the aesthetic qualities that defined Japanese printmaking in the nineteenth century.
