This woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicts Sakanoshita, the forty-eighth station along the Tokaido road. The Tokaido was the primary route connecting Edo and Kyoto during the Edo period. Hokusai produced this series early in his career, focusing on the daily life and travellers encountered along this busy thoroughfare.
The composition shows a quiet moment at a roadside establishment. A man sits on the wooden veranda, while a woman and a child occupy the space nearby. The child plays a flute, adding a sense of stillness to the scene. Hokusai uses a clear, graphic style, employing distinct outlines and a controlled palette of soft greens, ochres, and muted reds. The architectural elements of the building, including the sliding panels and the elevated platform, provide a structured frame for the figures.
Unlike the later, more famous series by Utagawa Hiroshige, which focused heavily on weather and atmospheric conditions, Hokusai’s interpretation of the Tokaido stations often prioritised human activity and local customs. Katsushika Hokusai was a visionary Japanese artist whose influence stretched far beyond his lifetime.
