A fine example of International Gothic painting, this tempera panel depicts Saint Ursula sheltering her companions, characterised by decorative patterns and gold leaf.
This tempera panel by the Venetian painter Niccolò di Pietro depicts Saint Ursula, a legendary figure of Christian hagiography, surrounded by her companions. The composition follows the iconographic tradition of the 'Virgin of Mercy', where the central figure extends her mantle to protect those beneath it. Here, Ursula stands as a protective presence, her arms outstretched to embrace the group of maidens who cluster around her.
The work displays the characteristics of the International Gothic style, which flourished in Europe at the turn of the fifteenth century. The figures are rendered with a focus on decorative elegance rather than anatomical realism. Their faces are uniform, with delicate features and serene expressions. The artist employs a flattened perspective, prioritising the arrangement of forms and the application of rich surface textures over spatial depth.
Attention is drawn to the elaborate textiles worn by the figures. The central mantle is decorated with a pattern of gold roundels containing birds, a motif reflecting the influence of luxury fabrics imported into Venice through trade routes. The background is a flat, solid red, which serves to isolate the figures and emphasise the gold leaf used in the halos and the intricate details of the garments. The base of the panel is filled with a dense, textured representation of the ground, rendered with small, repetitive marks. This painting provides a clear example of the Venetian approach to religious art during the early Quattrocento, where the emphasis on colour, pattern, and gold leaf created a visual language of spiritual opulence. The work is currently held in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
