A 1761 religious work by Joseph-Marie Vien, depicting Saint Theobald presenting lilies to Saint Louis and Marguerite of Provence.
Joseph-Marie Vien, a central figure in the transition from the Rococo to the Neoclassical style in France, produced this work in 1761. The composition depicts a hagiographic scene involving Saint Theobald, who presents a basket containing an eleven-branched lily to King Louis IX of France and his wife, Marguerite of Provence. The figures are arranged with a sense of theatrical gravity, typical of Vien's approach to religious narrative.
The artist employs a balanced palette, favouring soft, muted tones that allow the central basket of white lilies to draw the eye. The drapery of the garments, particularly the heavy folds of the monastic habit and the royal robes, demonstrates the technical precision that earned Vien his reputation as a master of the French school. The background features a simplified architectural silhouette and a large wooden cross, which provides a vertical anchor for the scene.
Vien was known for his rejection of the excessive ornamentation that defined the earlier part of the eighteenth century. Instead, he looked toward the clarity of the Renaissance and the antique, seeking a return to order and moral seriousness. This painting reflects that shift, as the figures possess a statuesque quality, and the interaction between the saint and the royal couple is rendered with restraint. The lighting is diffuse, creating a calm atmosphere that directs the viewer toward the symbolic offering at the centre of the frame. The work remains a clear example of the mid-eighteenth-century French academic style, where historical and religious subjects were treated with a blend of classical rigour and emotional accessibility.
