A dramatic etching by Irish artist James Barry, depicting the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian with expressive line work and deep tonal contrasts.
James Barry, an Irish painter and printmaker, produced this etching of Saint Sebastian during his time in London. Barry was a figure of some controversy within the Royal Academy, known for his uncompromising views on the high purpose of history painting. This work reflects his interest in the human form and the dramatic potential of classical subjects.
The composition depicts the saint bound to a tree, his body angled to suggest both physical suffering and spiritual resignation. Barry employs a vigorous, expressive etching technique, using varied line weights to create deep shadows and a sense of atmospheric tension. The surrounding foliage is rendered with loose, gestural marks, which contrast with the more defined musculature of the central figure. The background, though minimal, provides a sense of space that directs the viewer's focus toward the saint.
Unlike the polished, academic style favoured by many of his contemporaries, Barry's printmaking often displays a raw, experimental quality. He frequently reworked his plates, leading to variations in tone and texture. This particular impression captures the artist's focus on anatomical precision combined with a moody, chiaroscuro effect. The work demonstrates his ability to convey emotional weight through line alone, eschewing the need for colour to establish the gravity of the scene. It remains a representative example of his graphic output, showing his dedication to the traditions of the Old Masters while maintaining a distinct, personal approach to the medium of etching.
