A detailed nineteenth-century engraving depicting Saint Roch, the patron saint of plague victims, surrounded by the afflicted.
This etching and engraving by Joseph Hunin depicts Saint Roch, a fourteenth-century saint traditionally invoked against the plague. The composition follows the conventions of religious iconography, positioning the saint in a superior, elevated space while the afflicted sufferers occupy the foreground. Hunin employs a dramatic use of light to separate the divine intervention from the earthly suffering below. The saint is shown with his characteristic attributes, including the dog that provided him with food during his own illness, and a staff.
The figures in the lower register are rendered with a focus on anatomical detail and emotional expression, capturing the physical toll of the disease. The arched frame suggests the work was intended to evoke the appearance of a devotional altarpiece. Hunin, a Belgian engraver active in the early nineteenth century, demonstrates a technical command of line and shadow, using cross-hatching to build volume and texture across the figures and the architectural elements. The inclusion of a tablet held by an angel, bearing the inscription 'Peste Patronus', identifies the saint's specific role in the Catholic tradition.
This print reflects the period's interest in historical and religious subjects, often reproduced for wider distribution among the faithful. The work is a clear example of the academic style prevalent in the Low Countries during the early nineteenth century, where artists sought to balance classical composition with the emotive requirements of religious narrative. The contrast between the ethereal, illuminated upper portion and the dark, crowded lower section creates a clear visual hierarchy, directing the viewer's attention from the human plight to the source of spiritual relief.
