A refined chiaroscuro woodcut depicting Saint Paul and two saints, executed by Paul-Ponce-Antoine Robert after a drawing by Bartolomeo Ramenghi.
This print is a fine example of the chiaroscuro woodcut technique, a method that uses multiple blocks to create tonal depth and shadow. The work depicts Saint Paul at the centre, flanked by two female saints, while a celestial choir of angels occupies the upper register. The composition is derived from a drawing by Bartolomeo Ramenghi, known as Bagnacavallo, which was held in the collection of Pierre Crozat, a financier and patron of the arts in eighteenth-century Paris.
Paul-Ponce-Antoine Robert, working under the direction of Nicolas le Sueur, executed this print as part of a larger project to reproduce works from the Crozat collection. The technique relies on a line block for the primary contours and additional blocks for the subtle green washes that define the forms and drapery. This approach mimics the appearance of a wash drawing, providing a sense of volume and atmosphere that a standard black-and-white engraving could not achieve. The figures are rendered with a grace typical of the period, with flowing garments and balanced postures that reflect the influence of Italian Renaissance masters on French printmakers of the early eighteenth century.
The print serves as a record of the artistic tastes of the Parisian elite during the Enlightenment. By translating drawings into woodcuts, printmakers like Robert made the contents of private collections accessible to a wider audience of artists and connoisseurs. The technical precision required to align the blocks for the green tones demonstrates the high level of craftsmanship involved in this collaborative process. The work remains a clear representation of the intersection between Italian draftsmanship and French reproductive printmaking traditions.
