A detailed 1645 ink drawing by Dutch artist Jacob Symonsz. Pynas, depicting Saint Paul with his traditional attributes at a writing table.
This drawing by Jacob Symonsz. Pynas, dated 1645, depicts the figure of Saint Paul in a contemplative state. The artist employs a clear, linear approach, using pen and brown ink to define the form of the apostle. Paul is shown with his traditional attributes: a long, flowing beard and a sword, which refers to his martyrdom. He sits at a table where a book and a quill rest, suggesting his role as an author of the epistles. The background includes a draped textile and architectural elements, providing a sense of interior space without overwhelming the subject.
Pynas was a member of the Pre-Rembrandtists, a group of painters who worked in Amsterdam during the early seventeenth century. His work often reflects an interest in biblical narratives and the influence of Italianate styles, which he encountered during his travels. The drawing demonstrates his ability to capture character through expressive line work and shading. The curls of the hair and the folds of the garment are rendered with precision, showing the artist's attention to texture and form. The composition is balanced, with the figure occupying the majority of the frame, drawing the viewer's attention to the expression of the saint. This piece offers a glimpse into the draughtsmanship of the period, where ink sketches served as both preparatory studies and finished works for collectors. The signature and date are clearly visible on the right side of the sheet, confirming its provenance and the period of its creation. It remains a representative example of the religious subject matter common in Dutch art of the mid-seventeenth century.
