A narrative panel painting by Bicci di Lorenzo depicting the miracle of Saint Nicholas, rendered in the clear, structured style of the early Italian Renaissance.
This panel painting by Bicci di Lorenzo depicts the well-known hagiographic legend of Saint Nicholas. According to the narrative, the saint miraculously restores three youths to life after they were murdered and hidden in a pickling tub by a wicked innkeeper. The composition is divided into distinct architectural zones, a common feature in early fifteenth-century Florentine art, which allows the viewer to follow the sequence of the miracle within a single frame.
On the left, the three youths emerge from their wooden barrels, their hands clasped in prayer as they are returned to life by the intervention of the bishop. Saint Nicholas stands centrally, dressed in his episcopal robes and holding a crozier, his gesture of blessing directed toward the resurrected figures. To the right, the parents of the youths kneel in gratitude, while the innkeeper is shown in the background, occupied with his daily tasks. The architectural setting, with its open arches and tiled roof, provides a structured environment for the figures, reflecting the transition from the flattened space of the Gothic period toward the early experiments in perspective that defined the Renaissance.
Bicci di Lorenzo was a prolific painter in Florence, operating a large workshop that produced numerous altarpieces and devotional works. His style is characterised by clear outlines, a balanced distribution of figures, and a focus on narrative clarity. The use of tempera on wood panel allows for the precise application of colour and detail, particularly in the rendering of the saint's vestments and the domestic objects arranged on the shelves. This work is a fine example of the devotional art produced for private or ecclesiastical settings during the early Quattrocento, offering a window into the visual culture and religious storytelling of the period.
