A detailed nineteenth-century engraving of Saint Nicholas of Myra, based on a painting by Johann von Schraudolph, capturing the saint with the three children of legend.
This engraving by Heinrich Nüsser depicts Saint Nicholas of Myra, the patron saint of children. The composition is based on an original painting by Johann von Schraudolph, a figure associated with the Nazarene movement in German art. This group sought to revive the aesthetic qualities of late medieval and early Renaissance religious painting, prioritising clarity, linear precision, and devotional sincerity.
Saint Nicholas is shown in his episcopal vestments, holding a crozier in one hand and a book in the other. Beside him, three children emerge from a wooden tub, a reference to the legend of the saint resurrecting three youths who had been murdered and pickled in brine. The engraving technique employs fine, controlled lines to define the folds of the heavy fabric and the gentle expressions of the figures. The background remains sparse, focusing the viewer on the narrative elements of the scene.
Nüsser, a skilled engraver based in Düsseldorf, was frequently employed to translate the works of contemporary painters into print form. This allowed religious imagery to reach a wider audience through the Verein zur Verbreitung religiöser Bilder (Association for the Distribution of Religious Pictures). The print exhibits the characteristic restraint of the period, avoiding dramatic chiaroscuro in favour of a balanced, even illumination. The inclusion of the Latin inscription 'S. Nicolaus' at the base provides a formal identification, typical of devotional prints produced during the mid-nineteenth century. The work remains a clear example of the technical proficiency found in German printmaking workshops of the era, where the objective was the faithful reproduction of moralising and spiritual subjects for domestic or ecclesiastical use.
