A detailed fifteenth-century engraving by Master ES, depicting the archangel Michael triumphing over a demon with precise, technical linework.
This engraving by the anonymous German printmaker known as Master ES depicts the archangel Michael in the act of subduing a demonic figure. Active during the mid-fifteenth century, Master ES is a figure of significant interest in the history of printmaking, as he was among the first to sign his plates with a monogram. His work bridges the gap between the earlier, more linear styles of the Gothic period and the developing technical sophistication of the Northern Renaissance.
The composition follows traditional iconographic conventions, showing the archangel clad in armour, his sword raised, while he stands firmly upon the defeated adversary. The artist employs a variety of hatching techniques to create volume in the drapery and the metallic surfaces of the armour. The figure of the demon, rendered with grotesque features, provides a sharp contrast to the serene, composed expression of the archangel. The ground is sparsely decorated with stylised floral motifs, a common feature in prints of this era, which help to ground the figures within the frame.
Master ES was a prolific engraver, and his output had a measurable impact on the development of the medium in the Upper Rhine region. His ability to manipulate the burin allowed for a greater range of tonal variation than had been previously achieved by his predecessors. This specific print demonstrates his skill in balancing the narrative requirements of the subject with the technical demands of engraving on copper. The clarity of the lines and the precision of the cross-hatching reflect the high standards of craftsmanship expected of a master printmaker in the fifteenth century. This print offers a clear view into the devotional art of the period, capturing the tension between celestial order and chaotic forces.
