A precise etching by Eugène Bejot, capturing the fortified silhouette of Saint-Malo from the perspective of Dinard.
Eugène Bejot was a French printmaker known for his precise, atmospheric etchings of urban and coastal scenes. This work captures the fortified silhouette of Saint-Malo as seen from the neighbouring town of Dinard. Bejot employs a restrained, linear approach, allowing the white space of the paper to represent the expansive sky and the calm waters of the Rance estuary. The composition is anchored by the heavy, textured masonry of the foreground pier, which provides a stark contrast to the distant, delicate outlines of the walled city.
Bejot often focused on the interplay between architecture and water. In this print, the reflections of the boats and the pier are rendered with short, horizontal strokes, suggesting the gentle movement of the tide. The inclusion of small figures on the pier adds a sense of scale, grounding the viewer in the physical reality of the location. His technique relies on the economy of line, avoiding unnecessary detail to maintain a sense of clarity and stillness. This approach reflects the broader interest in topographical accuracy and atmospheric observation that defined much of his graphic output during the early twentieth century.
As a master of the copper plate, Bejot utilised the medium to convey the specific light conditions of the Brittany coast. The print demonstrates his ability to balance the solid, imposing nature of the fortifications with the ephemeral quality of the sea. By stripping away extraneous elements, he directs the eye toward the horizon, where the historic architecture of Saint-Malo meets the sky. This piece is a characteristic example of his work, which remains valued for its technical precision and its quiet, observational quality. It offers a view of a specific moment in time, capturing the coastal character of the region without resorting to sentimentality.
