A detailed 17th-century engraving by Jean Langlois depicting Saint Luke the Evangelist painting a vision of the Virgin and Child.
This engraving depicts the traditional subject of Saint Luke the Evangelist, the patron saint of artists, capturing the likeness of the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child. The composition follows a long-standing iconographic convention where the saint is shown at his easel, guided by a divine vision. Jean Langlois employs precise burin work to define the heavy folds of the saint's robes and the subtle modelling of the figures, creating a sense of volume and weight within the scene.
To the right, the ox, a traditional attribute of Saint Luke, rests quietly, observing the act of creation. The artist is positioned in a kneeling posture, suggesting a state of devotion as he works. The inclusion of the apparition of the Virgin and Child on a cloud bank, mirrored by the sketch appearing on the canvas, reinforces the theme of divinely inspired art. The lighting is dramatic, typical of the Baroque period, with deep shadows providing contrast against the illuminated figures of the holy subjects and the painter.
Langlois demonstrates technical control through the use of cross-hatching and varied line weights to suggest texture, from the rougher coat of the ox to the smooth skin of the figures. The architectural elements of the easel and the surrounding space are kept relatively simple, ensuring the focus remains on the interaction between the painter and his celestial subjects. This print offers a clear example of seventeenth-century printmaking, where the medium was used to disseminate religious narratives and celebrate the status of the artist as a conduit for higher truths. The work is a fine specimen of the period's interest in the intersection of faith and artistic practice, rendered with the clarity and formal rigour characteristic of the French school of engraving during the reign of Louis XIV.
