A detailed late sixteenth-century engraving by Raffaello Guidi, depicting Saint Jerome in the wilderness after a design by Palma il Giovane.
This engraving by Raffaello Guidi depicts Saint Jerome in the wilderness, a subject frequently explored in late sixteenth-century Italian art. Guidi, an Italian printmaker active in Rome, executed this work after a design by the Venetian painter Palma il Giovane. The composition adheres to the conventions of the period, presenting the saint as an ascetic figure engaged in study and contemplation.
Saint Jerome is shown seated beneath a gnarled tree, his gaze directed towards an open book. His physical form is rendered with anatomical precision, reflecting the influence of Mannerist stylistic tendencies through the elongated proportions and the dramatic, muscular tension of his limbs. Beside him rests a skull, a traditional memento mori, while a lion, his constant companion in hagiographic accounts, occupies the lower left corner. To the right, a crucifix is positioned against a rocky outcrop, providing a focus for his spiritual devotion. The background features a distant, atmospheric view that contrasts with the immediate, detailed foreground.
Guidi employs a sophisticated system of cross-hatching and varied line weights to define form and texture. The engraving captures the rough bark of the tree, the weathered skin of the saint, and the soft folds of his drapery with technical dexterity. The Latin inscription at the base provides context for the scene, framing the saint's retreat as a rejection of worldly pleasures in favour of divine meditation. This print demonstrates the collaborative nature of print production in the late Renaissance, where the invention of a painter was translated into the medium of engraving by a specialist. The work remains a fine example of the technical skill required to translate the painterly qualities of Venetian art into the precise, linear language of the burin.
