Giuseppe Scolari, an Italian artist active in the late sixteenth century, produced this woodcut depicting Saint Jerome. The composition captures the saint in a rugged, natural setting, accompanied by his traditional attribute, the lion. Scolari employs a dramatic approach to form, utilising bold, sweeping lines to define the musculature of the saint and the flowing mane of the beast. The treatment of light and shadow is particularly notable for the period, as the artist uses dense hatching to create a sense of volume and atmosphere within the print.
The figure of Saint Jerome is rendered with a sense of physical tension, his gaze directed toward the crucifix he holds. The surrounding environment, while stylised, provides a sense of isolation appropriate to the subject.
