A fine etching by Pietro Faccini depicting Saint Francis of Assisi receiving the infant Christ from the Virgin Mary.
Pietro Faccini, an artist active in Bologna during the late sixteenth century, produced this etching depicting a vision of Saint Francis of Assisi. The composition captures the moment the Virgin Mary presents the infant Christ to the kneeling saint. Faccini, who studied under the Carracci, demonstrates a mastery of line and shadow that defines the Bolognese school of the period. The figures are rendered with a sense of movement, their forms emerging from the paper through a series of delicate, cross-hatched strokes.
The saint occupies the foreground, his posture conveying humility and awe as he cradles the child. Above, the Virgin appears amidst clouds, her form ethereal and light. The interaction between the two figures is defined by a soft, atmospheric quality, typical of Faccini's approach to printmaking. The background remains largely suggested, allowing the focus to remain on the emotional exchange between the figures. The etching technique allows for a range of tonal values, from the deep shadows in the folds of the saint's habit to the lighter, more open lines that define the celestial figures.
Faccini's work is often noted for its expressive quality and its departure from the rigid classicism of some of his contemporaries. This print reflects the artist's interest in the emotional potential of religious subjects. The composition is balanced, with the diagonal line of the saint's body leading the eye upward toward the Virgin. The inclusion of cherubic heads within the clouds adds to the spiritual atmosphere of the scene. This piece offers a clear example of the technical skill and stylistic sensibilities present in Italian printmaking at the turn of the seventeenth century.
