A narrative panel painting by Girolamo di Benvenuto depicting Saint Catherine of Siena intervening in a spiritual struggle for a dying nun's soul.
This panel painting by Girolamo di Benvenuto di Giovanni del Guasta depicts a specific hagiographic episode involving Saint Catherine of Siena. The narrative unfolds across a split composition: on the left, Saint Catherine stands in prayer, gesturing towards a vision of Christ surrounded by cherubim. Between the saint and the interior scene, a winged devil flees, clutching a scroll that represents the binding pact of the dying Sister Palmerina.
On the right, the domestic interior shows the bedside of the ailing nun. A friar reads from a book, while another woman observes the scene. The artist employs a clear, linear style characteristic of the Sienese school at the turn of the sixteenth century. The spatial arrangement is somewhat flattened, typical of predella panels designed for larger altarpieces, where the focus remains on the clarity of the moral narrative rather than strict adherence to linear perspective.
The palette is dominated by the stark contrast between the saint's black and white habit and the saturated reds of the bed coverings and the devil's wings. The landscape visible in the background provides a serene counterpoint to the dramatic spiritual struggle occurring in the foreground. Girolamo, the son of the painter Benvenuto di Giovanni, maintained the traditional Sienese aesthetic while incorporating contemporary stylistic developments. This work demonstrates the period's interest in didactic religious imagery, intended to instruct the faithful on the power of intercession and the constant presence of spiritual conflict. The fine crackle pattern across the surface indicates the age of the original wood panel support, which is preserved in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
