Paul Signac, a central figure in the development of Neo-Impressionism, produced this work during his travels along the French coast. The painting depicts the harbour at Le Bechet, Saint Brac, capturing the interplay between the rocky foreground, the calm water, and the distant village. Signac employed his characteristic divisionist technique here, applying small, distinct strokes of colour that interact optically when viewed from a distance. This method allows the artist to construct the scene through a systematic arrangement of light and shadow rather than traditional blending.
The composition is divided into three horizontal zones: the textured, earthy foreground rock, the rhythmic surface of the sea, and the simplified forms of the coastal buildings. The water is rendered with short, horizontal dashes of blue, green, and violet, which convey the movement of the tide. In contrast, the buildings are depicted with flatter, more solid blocks of colour, providing a sense of stability against the fluid nature of the sea. A single boat sits in the centre of the bay, acting as a point of reference that draws the eye across the expanse of water toward the horizon.
Signac was deeply interested in the scientific theories of colour perception, particularly those proposed by Michel Eugène Chevreul. By placing complementary colours side by side, he sought to achieve a greater luminosity than was possible with mixed pigments. This painting demonstrates his ability to balance these theoretical concerns with a direct observation of the maritime environment. The palette remains focused on the cool tones of the water, balanced by the warmer, ochre-toned grasses and the muted hues of the village architecture. This work provides a clear example of the artist's transition from the rigid pointillism of his early career toward a more fluid, expressive application of paint.

Artist Biography
Paul Signac
Signac embraced Pointillism after encountering Seurat's *A Sunday on La Grande Jatte* in 1884. Captivated by the scientific approach to colour and light, he became a devoted follower and, later, a leading advocate of the style. Following Seurat's untimely death in 1891, Signac stepped into the role of the movement's champion, ensuring its continued influence on the avant-garde. His own works, such as *The Red Buoy* and *Antibes, Evening*, showcase his mastery of the technique, using vibrant dots of pure colour to create luminous and harmonious compositions.
Beyond his artistic output, Signac was also a dedicated writer and theorist. His book, *From Eugène Delacroix to Neo-Impressionism*, remains a seminal text on the subject, providing invaluable insights into the principles and philosophy behind Pointillism. Signac's passion for sailing also profoundly influenced his art, with many of his paintings depicting coastal scenes and harbours across France. He died in 1935, leaving behind a legacy as both a talented artist and a key intellectual force within the Neo-Impressionist movement.
