A late fifteenth-century engraving of Saint Bartholomew by the Monogrammist IA, featuring precise line work and traditional religious iconography.
This engraving depicts Saint Bartholomew, identified by the flaying knife he holds, which serves as the traditional attribute of his martyrdom. Attributed to the Monogrammist IA, an artist active in the late fifteenth century, the work reflects the stylistic conventions of German printmaking during the Northern Renaissance. The figure stands in a frontal pose, draped in heavy, voluminous robes that demonstrate the artist's focus on linear definition and the rhythmic quality of fabric folds.
The composition is defined by a clear, controlled use of the burin. The artist employs parallel hatching and cross-hatching to model the form of the saint, creating a sense of weight and volume within the drapery. The facial features are rendered with precise, economical lines, conveying a solemn expression. A simple halo encircles the head, providing a subtle indication of sanctity without distracting from the graphic clarity of the figure. The background remains plain, directing the viewer's attention entirely to the saint and his symbolic implement.
Prints of this period were often produced for devotional purposes, serving as accessible images for personal prayer or as models for other craftsmen. The Monogrammist IA remains a somewhat elusive figure, known primarily through a small body of engravings that share this characteristic attention to detail and formal structure. The work provides a clear example of the technical proficiency achieved by early printmakers in the Germanic regions, who utilised the copper plate to achieve a level of detail that was difficult to replicate in woodcut. This fine art print captures the original texture of the paper and the crispness of the engraved lines, offering a direct connection to the aesthetic sensibilities of the late medieval and early Renaissance transition.
