A fourteenth-century tempera panel by Maso di Banco depicting Saint Anthony of Padua against a traditional gold leaf background.
This panel painting depicts Saint Anthony of Padua, a central figure in the Franciscan order. Attributed to the Florentine painter Maso di Banco, the work reflects the stylistic developments of the mid-fourteenth century in Italy. The saint is shown in a three-quarter profile, wearing the traditional brown habit of his order. He holds a green book, which is decorated with gold leaf detailing and metal clasps. His expression is one of quiet contemplation, rendered with a degree of naturalism that moved away from the rigid stylisation of earlier Byzantine models.
The background consists of a gold leaf ground, a common feature in devotional art of this period. The halo surrounding the saint's head is incised with decorative patterns, catching the light and creating a sense of physical presence. The artist uses subtle shading to define the folds of the habit and the contours of the saint's face, demonstrating a sophisticated understanding of form and volume. The pointed arch shape of the panel suggests it was originally part of a larger polyptych, likely intended for a church altar.
Maso di Banco was a follower of Giotto, and his work carries forward the interest in human emotion and spatial clarity. The figure occupies the space with a sense of weight, while the delicate application of tempera allows for fine details in the facial features and the book's ornamentation. This piece offers a clear example of the transition towards a more humanistic approach in religious painting, where the focus shifts from purely symbolic representation to the depiction of individuals with distinct character and presence. The preservation of the gold leaf and the clarity of the pigments provide a view into the technical standards of the Trecento period.
