A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Pietro del Po, depicting Saint Andrew with his traditional X-shaped cross.
This etching by Pietro del Po depicts Saint Andrew, the apostle, positioned before his characteristic X-shaped cross. Del Po, an Italian painter and printmaker active in Rome and Naples during the seventeenth century, demonstrates a command of line and shadow typical of the Baroque period. The composition focuses on the figure of the saint, whose musculature and drapery are rendered with precise, rhythmic hatching. His upward gaze and open hand gesture convey a sense of spiritual resignation, a common motif in religious iconography of the era.
The artist employs a clear, structured approach to the figure, balancing the weight of the wooden cross against the flowing fabric of the saint's robes. The background remains minimal, allowing the viewer to concentrate on the anatomical study and the expressive quality of the saint's face. Del Po was known for his ability to translate the dramatic sensibilities of his contemporaries into the medium of printmaking. This work reflects the technical rigour of the Roman school, where the study of classical form remained a primary concern for artists.
As a print, this piece offers a clear view of the artist's graphic technique. The lines are controlled, building volume through varying densities of cross-hatching. The texture of the wood on the cross is suggested through subtle, curved strokes, contrasting with the smoother, more fluid lines used for the skin and garments. This print serves as an example of the dissemination of religious imagery through etching in the seventeenth century, providing a window into the aesthetic priorities of the Italian Baroque. The work is held in several institutional collections, including the Rijksmuseum, where it is catalogued as part of their extensive print holdings.
