Beskrivning
A characteristic maritime study by Alfred Wallis, featuring a sailing boat rendered in muted tones on cardboard with his signature direct, non-academic style.
Alfred Wallis, a former Cornish fisherman and scrap merchant, began painting in his late sixties following the death of his wife. His work is defined by a lack of formal training, which allowed him to bypass conventional rules of perspective and scale. Instead, Wallis prioritised the memory of his experiences at sea, often using whatever materials were available, such as discarded cardboard boxes or scraps of paper.
In this work, the vessel is rendered with a directness that captures the essence of a working boat. The hull is painted in a dark, solid tone, contrasting with the expansive, muted grey of the sails. The pencil lines remain visible, providing a structural framework for the paint. Wallis often employed a flattened perspective, where the boat sits upon the water without the traditional horizon line found in academic maritime painting. This approach creates a sense of immediacy, as if the subject is floating in a space defined by the artist's own recollection rather than a specific geographic location.
The surface of the cardboard shows signs of age, including minor staining and texture, which are characteristic of Wallis's surviving output. His choice of materials was born of necessity, yet these surfaces now contribute to the tactile quality of his work. The composition is sparse, focusing entirely on the silhouette of the boat against the neutral background. By stripping away extraneous detail, Wallis achieves a clarity that resonates with the simplicity of his life in St Ives. This piece offers a glimpse into the singular vision of an artist who painted not for an audience, but to record the world he knew intimately.
