A detailed nineteenth-century wood engraving of the Notre Dame sacristy and the Seine riverbank in Paris, captured by the French firm Best et Cie.
This wood engraving depicts the southern exterior of the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris, specifically focusing on the sacristy and the adjacent riverbank. The work is attributed to the French engraving firm Best et Cie, a workshop active during the nineteenth century that frequently collaborated with illustrators to produce detailed prints for periodicals and travel publications. The composition captures the Gothic architecture of the cathedral, with particular attention given to the rose window and the flying buttresses that support the structure. The foreground features the Seine, where small boats are moored against the stone quay. The artist employs a dense system of cross-hatching to define the textures of the masonry, the rippling water, and the shadows cast by the cathedral walls. This technique allows for a high degree of tonal variation, creating a sense of depth and atmospheric perspective despite the limitations of the woodblock medium. The inclusion of small figures along the riverbank provides a sense of scale, contrasting the human presence with the monumental proportions of the ecclesiastical building. The print reflects the nineteenth-century interest in documenting historical architecture, a practice that gained momentum as urban renewal projects began to alter the appearance of European cities. By focusing on the interplay between the stone structure and the natural light, the engraver achieves a balanced representation of the site. The work remains a precise record of the cathedral's exterior before later restorations, offering a view of the building as it appeared to observers in the mid-to-late nineteenth century.
