Jacopo de' Barbari, a Venetian artist active during the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, produced this engraving during a period of significant experimentation in printmaking. The composition depicts a classical scene involving figures gathered around an altar, a subject that reflects the humanist interest in antiquity prevalent in Northern Italy at the time. The central male figure, often identified as Priapus, stands behind an altar where a small fire burns. He is flanked by two women in classical drapery, one of whom holds an infant.
