A refined steel engraving by Richard Austin Artlett, depicting the mythological figure Sabrina after the marble sculpture by William Calder Marshall.
This steel engraving by Richard Austin Artlett depicts the mythological figure Sabrina, based on the original marble sculpture by William Calder Marshall. The work captures the figure in a seated pose, draped in fabric that pools around her form. Her gaze is directed away from the viewer, suggesting a contemplative or detached state. The engraving technique allows for a precise rendering of the marble texture, with subtle gradations of light and shadow defining the musculature and the folds of the drapery.
William Calder Marshall, a sculptor associated with the Royal Academy, created the original statue of Sabrina, a character from British folklore often associated with the River Severn. The sculpture was widely admired during the mid-nineteenth century for its adherence to classical proportions and its serene composition. Artlett, a skilled engraver, translated the three-dimensional form into a two-dimensional print, maintaining the smooth surfaces and the balanced arrangement of the original work. The arched border framing the figure provides a sense of architectural structure, common in prints produced for the Art-Union of London during this period.
This print reflects the Victorian interest in classical themes and the dissemination of fine art through high-quality reproductive engraving. By translating sculpture into print, artists like Artlett made works of art accessible to a broader audience. The composition remains focused on the central figure, avoiding unnecessary background detail to ensure the viewer concentrates on the form and the narrative quality of the subject. The print is a clear example of the technical proficiency required in nineteenth-century reproductive printmaking, where the engraver had to interpret the tonal values of stone through a series of fine lines and cross-hatching.
