A classic example of Orphism, this abstract work by Robert Delaunay explores the rhythmic interaction of concentric circles and chromatic sequences.
Robert Delaunay, a central figure in the development of early twentieth-century abstraction, produced this work during his later period. The composition focuses on the interaction of circular forms and chromatic sequences. Delaunay, along with his wife Sonia Delaunay, pioneered the movement known as Orphism, which prioritised the musicality of colour and the rhythmic arrangement of geometric shapes over representational subject matter.
In this piece, the viewer observes a series of concentric circles that overlap and intersect across the canvas. These forms create a sense of motion, as if the colours themselves are vibrating against one another. The artist employs a specific theory of simultaneous contrast, a concept derived from the scientific study of optics. By placing complementary colours side by side, he generates an optical effect that suggests depth and movement without relying on traditional perspective. The application of paint is deliberate, with distinct zones of colour that define the structure of the work.
This painting represents the artist's ongoing investigation into the properties of light and the way human perception processes visual information. Unlike the rigid geometry found in some other forms of abstraction, this work maintains a fluid, organic quality. The overlapping arcs and segments suggest a celestial or cosmic order, reflecting the artist's interest in the relationship between scientific discovery and artistic expression. The absence of a fixed horizon line or recognisable objects allows the viewer to engage directly with the arrangement of hue and tone. It is a study in the mechanics of vision, stripped of narrative or symbolic baggage, focusing entirely on the sensory experience of the painted surface.
