A classic Yokohama-e woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshifuji depicting Russian visitors in Japan during the mid-19th century.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshifuji belongs to the genre known as Yokohama-e, which emerged during the late Edo period as Japan began to open its ports to foreign trade. These prints served as a visual record for the Japanese public, who were curious about the appearance, dress, and customs of the foreigners arriving in Yokohama. The work depicts a Russian couple and a companion, rendered with the characteristic stylisation of the Utagawa school.
The central male figure wears a heavy, fur-trimmed coat and a military-style cap, reflecting the Japanese perception of Russian winter attire. Beside him, the woman is dressed in a structured European-style gown with a striped skirt and a distinctive hat. The artist employs a flat, graphic approach to the figures, using bold outlines and a limited colour palette typical of the medium. The background remains neutral, allowing the focus to rest entirely on the exotic details of the subjects' clothing and posture.
Yoshifuji, a student of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, was prolific in producing these prints that documented the arrival of Westerners. The inclusion of phonetic Japanese characters to label the subjects as Russians demonstrates the educational intent behind such prints. The composition is straightforward, prioritising clarity and documentation over atmospheric depth. The print provides a glimpse into a period of rapid cultural exchange, capturing the fascination with the 'other' that defined the early years of the Meiji era's precursor period. The work is a historical document of the encounter between Japan and the West, preserved through the traditional techniques of the woodblock printmaker.
