A dynamic 1905 oil painting by Frederic Remington depicting a mounted charge, characterised by muted tones and expressive brushwork.
Frederic Remington, a prolific chronicler of the American West, produced Rushing Red Lodges Passed through the Line in 1905. This work captures a moment of intense conflict, depicting a group of mounted warriors charging across a field. The composition is dominated by the forward momentum of the horses and their riders, who are rendered with a sense of urgency and motion. In the foreground, the aftermath of the encounter is visible, with figures positioned on the ground, providing a stark contrast to the kinetic energy of the cavalry above.
Remington utilised a restrained palette, relying on shades of grey, brown, and muted earth tones to convey the atmosphere of the scene. His brushwork is direct and purposeful, focusing on the anatomy of the horses and the posture of the riders. The artist often drew upon his own experiences and observations of the frontier, though his later works, such as this one, moved away from strict documentary accuracy toward a more atmospheric and painterly approach. The lack of a clear horizon line draws the viewer into the immediate action, creating a sense of immersion in the event.
This painting reflects the artist's technical maturity during the final years of his career. By 1905, Remington had largely abandoned the highly detailed, illustrative style of his earlier magazine work in favour of broader, more expressive paint application. The work remains a representative example of his interest in the dramatic narratives of the American frontier, focusing on the tension between opposing forces. The figures are depicted with a focus on silhouette and movement, ensuring the viewer's attention remains fixed on the central action of the charge. This print captures the tonal nuances of the original oil painting, preserving the artist's specific approach to light and shadow.
