A detailed ink and wash drawing from 1798 by Johannes Petrus van Horstok, depicting a tranquil riverside ruin and a small boat.
This monochromatic work by Johannes Petrus van Horstok, dated 1798, captures a quiet scene of a ruin situated by a waterway. Van Horstok, a Dutch artist active during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, often focused on topographical subjects and architectural remnants. The composition features a tall, weathered tower as its primary subject, partially obscured by foliage and showing signs of decay. A small boat carrying two figures occupies the foreground, providing a sense of scale and human activity against the stillness of the stone structure.
The artist employs a range of grey tones to define the forms, using wash to create depth in the clouds and the water. The technique relies on subtle gradations of ink to suggest the texture of the masonry and the soft appearance of the trees. In the distance, a smaller tower and a church spire are visible, suggesting a wider view of a Dutch river town. The inclusion of birds in the sky and the reflection of the boat in the water add a sense of atmosphere to the scene.
Van Horstok was known for his attention to detail in architectural drawing, a skill evident in the rendering of the tower's windows and the surrounding walls. The work reflects the period's interest in the picturesque, where ruins were frequently depicted as subjects of contemplation. By focusing on the interplay between the man-made structure and the natural environment, the artist creates a balanced composition that invites the viewer to observe the quiet details of the scene. This print offers a clear view of the original ink and wash technique, preserving the tonal nuances of the artist's hand.
