Painted in 1884, this work captures a transitional moment in the career of Paul Signac. Before he fully adopted the systematic application of dots known as pointillism, Signac experimented with the broken brushwork and light-filled palette of the Impressionists. The scene depicts the outskirts of Montmartre, a district that still retained a semi-rural character during the late nineteenth century.
The composition is anchored by a wooden fence that separates the foreground from the open space beyond. To the left, a street lamp stands as a vertical marker, while a bundled tree trunk balances the frame on the right. In the distance, the iconic windmills of Montmartre, such as the Moulin de la Galette, rise against the sky. These structures were remnants of an older, agrarian Paris that was rapidly disappearing under the pressure of urban development.
Signac employs a palette dominated by warm yellows, ochres, and soft purples. The light appears to be that of a late afternoon, casting long shadows across the ground and bathing the scene in a golden glow. The brushwork is energetic and direct, showing the influence of Claude Monet and Armand Guillaumin. Unlike his later, more rigid compositions, this painting retains a sense of spontaneity. It documents the physical geography of a changing city, focusing on the intersection of industrial progress and the remaining rural architecture. The inclusion of the street lamp serves as a reminder of the encroaching modernisation of the area. This piece offers a glimpse into the early stylistic development of an artist who would soon become a primary figure in the Neo-Impressionist movement.

Artist Biography
Paul Signac
Signac embraced Pointillism after encountering Seurat's *A Sunday on La Grande Jatte* in 1884. Captivated by the scientific approach to colour and light, he became a devoted follower and, later, a leading advocate of the style. Following Seurat's untimely death in 1891, Signac stepped into the role of the movement's champion, ensuring its continued influence on the avant-garde. His own works, such as *The Red Buoy* and *Antibes, Evening*, showcase his mastery of the technique, using vibrant dots of pure colour to create luminous and harmonious compositions.
Beyond his artistic output, Signac was also a dedicated writer and theorist. His book, *From Eugène Delacroix to Neo-Impressionism*, remains a seminal text on the subject, providing invaluable insights into the principles and philosophy behind Pointillism. Signac's passion for sailing also profoundly influenced his art, with many of his paintings depicting coastal scenes and harbours across France. He died in 1935, leaving behind a legacy as both a talented artist and a key intellectual force within the Neo-Impressionist movement.
