This etching by the Swiss artist Johann Caspar Ulinger depicts a rugged, mountainous scene defined by its dramatic geological features. The composition focuses on a steep, rocky outcrop, where jagged stone formations dominate the foreground. A small waterfall cascades over the rocks on the left side, providing a sense of movement within the static stone environment. Ulinger employs a disciplined etching technique, using varied line weights to distinguish between the coarse texture of the boulders and the lighter, more delicate foliage of the trees clinging to the slopes.
The trees are rendered with a distinct sense of motion, their branches leaning as if caught in a mountain breeze. This stylistic choice adds a layer of animation to the scene, contrasting with the solid, immovable nature of the rock face. The artist uses cross-hatching and fine parallel lines to create depth and shadow, effectively modelling the forms of the terrain without relying on tonal washes.
