A 1889 etching by Anders Zorn depicting the Spanish dancer Rosita Mauri, characterised by rapid, expressive line work and high-contrast lighting.
Anders Zorn produced this etching of the Spanish dancer Rosita Mauri in 1889. Zorn, a Swedish artist known for his technical facility in both oil painting and printmaking, captured Mauri during her time in Paris. The work demonstrates his characteristic approach to the medium, where he utilised rapid, directional hatching to define form and light.
The composition focuses on the figure of Mauri as she stands near a doorway. Zorn employed a series of vertical and diagonal lines to create a sense of movement and atmosphere. The density of the etched lines varies across the surface, with heavier concentrations used to suggest the shadows of her attire and the depth of the interior space. This technique allows the white of the paper to function as the primary source of illumination, giving the figure a sense of immediacy.
Zorn was an accomplished etcher, and his prints were collected widely during his lifetime. He often worked directly onto the copper plate, which accounts for the spontaneous quality of his line work. In this portrait, he avoids excessive detail, preferring instead to suggest the presence of the subject through gesture and the interplay of tone. The result is a study that balances the graphic nature of the etching process with a sense of observed reality. The work remains a clear example of his ability to translate the fluidity of his painting style into the more rigid requirements of the printing press. By focusing on the essential elements of the pose and the surrounding light, Zorn provides a direct encounter with the subject, free from unnecessary ornamentation or narrative distraction.
