A refined Nihonga diptych by Hasegawa Gyokuhō, featuring delicate rose branches and sparrows rendered in ink and colour on silk.
This diptych by Hasegawa Gyokuhō belongs to the kachō-ga tradition, a genre focused on the depiction of birds and flowers. Gyokuhō, a practitioner of the Nihonga style, maintains a balance between traditional Japanese aesthetic values and the observational precision common in early twentieth-century painting. The work presents two vertical hanging scrolls, each featuring delicate botanical arrangements paired with small avian subjects.
The composition relies on the use of negative space, a characteristic feature of East Asian ink painting. The branches of the rose bushes extend across the silk surface with a sense of natural growth, while the sparrows are rendered with careful attention to their plumage and posture. The colour palette remains restrained, utilising soft pinks, muted greens, and earthy tones to suggest the seasonal transition of the flora. The artist employs fine brushwork to define the petals and leaves, ensuring that the botanical elements remain the primary focus of the viewer's attention.
Gyokuhō was active during a period when Japanese artists were navigating the influence of Western realism while preserving indigenous techniques. This piece reflects that synthesis, as the anatomical accuracy of the birds and the structural integrity of the plant stems suggest a close study of nature. The mounting of the scrolls, with their gold-flecked borders and grey silk headers, provides a formal frame that complements the lightness of the painted imagery. These scrolls function as a unified visual statement, capturing a quiet moment within the natural world. The work demonstrates the technical control required for painting on silk, where the medium demands deliberate, precise application of pigment to avoid bleeding or uneven saturation.
