A study of urban geometry and light, this work by Paul Cézanne captures the structured forms of rooftops and foliage through deliberate, layered brushwork.
This work by Paul Cézanne captures a dense urban view, focusing on the geometry of rooftops and the surrounding foliage. The composition relies on a series of overlapping planes, where the terracotta tiles of the roofs contrast with the cool, muted tones of the sky and the varied greens of the trees. Cézanne employs a structured approach to the application of paint, using short, deliberate brushstrokes that build form through colour rather than traditional line-based perspective.
During this period of his career, Cézanne moved away from the lighter, more spontaneous methods of the Impressionists. He sought to bring a sense of permanence and order to his subjects. The buildings are rendered as solid, block-like shapes, while the trees provide a soft, organic counterpoint to the rigid architecture. The palette is restrained, favouring earthy ochres, muted reds, and deep blues, which unify the scene. This approach allows the viewer to observe the construction of the image, as the artist balances the weight of the structures against the negative space of the sky.
Cézanne often returned to the theme of the built environment, finding interest in the way light interacts with surfaces. In this piece, the shadows are not merely black, but are composed of deep blues and purples, a technique that adds depth to the forms. The lack of human figures keeps the focus entirely on the architectural arrangement and the physical presence of the city. This print offers a clear view of the artist's early experiments with form, which would later influence the development of Cubism. It is a study in balance, showing how simple shapes can create a cohesive and grounded visual experience.
