A classical Baroque landscape by Gaspard Dughet, featuring rugged rock formations, dense foliage, and hunters in an atmospheric, oval-framed setting.
Gaspard Dughet, a pupil and brother-in-law of Nicolas Poussin, was a central figure in the development of the classical landscape tradition in Rome during the seventeenth century. This oval composition demonstrates his mastery of the genre, where nature is structured through a series of receding planes. The foreground features rugged rock formations and dense foliage, which frame the scene and guide the viewer towards the distant, atmospheric horizon.
In this work, the human element is secondary to the environment. Small figures of hunters with their dogs are positioned within the lower right quadrant, providing a sense of scale against the imposing geological features. Dughet employs a palette of earthy browns, deep greens, and cool blues to define the transition from the shadowed foreground to the luminous, cloud-filled sky. The oval format, a common choice for decorative commissions in the period, encourages a focused viewing experience, drawing the eye toward the central waterfall and the distant, hazy mountains.
Unlike the more idealised, serene compositions of his contemporaries, Dughet often introduced a sense of wildness into his work. The gnarled trees and jagged stone surfaces suggest a raw, untamed quality, yet the overall arrangement remains balanced and deliberate. His technique involves careful layering of glazes to achieve depth, particularly in the treatment of the sky and the distant plains. This print captures the tonal nuances of the original oil painting, preserving the interplay between light and shadow that defines Dughet's approach to the natural world. It is a representative example of the seventeenth-century Roman school, reflecting the period's interest in the relationship between human activity and the physical environment.
