A refined mezzotint portrait of the British statesman Lord Castlereagh by the skilled engraver Charles Turner.
This mezzotint by Charles Turner depicts Robert Stewart, 2nd Marquess of Londonderry, widely known as Lord Castlereagh. As a prominent British statesman during the Napoleonic Wars, Castlereagh occupied a central position in European diplomacy. Turner, a master of the mezzotint process, captures the subject with a tonal range that defines the textures of his formal attire and the soft, atmospheric background.
The portrait presents Castlereagh in a three-quarter length pose. He wears a dark, tailored coat adorned with the star of the Order of the Garter, indicating his high social and political status. His expression is composed, reflecting the gravity associated with his role in the Congress of Vienna. The use of mezzotint allows for a smooth transition between light and shadow, creating a sense of volume and depth that distinguishes this work from standard line engravings of the period.
Charles Turner was highly regarded for his ability to translate oil paintings into print. His technical skill in managing the copper plate ensured that the subtle gradations of light on the subject's face and the folds of his clothing remained clear. The inclusion of the heraldic crest at the base of the print provides additional context regarding the subject's lineage and rank. This print offers a view into the visual culture of early 19th-century Britain, where such portraits were produced to circulate the likenesses of influential figures among the public and political classes. The work remains a representative example of the high-quality reproductive printmaking that flourished in London during the Regency era.
