A satirical lithograph by Honoré Daumier from his Les Gens de Justice series, depicting the swindler Robert-Macaire performing in a courtroom.
This lithograph belongs to the Les Gens de Justice series, a collection of satirical prints by Honoré Daumier that scrutinises the French legal profession during the July Monarchy. The central figure is Robert-Macaire, a character originally created by the actor Frédéric Lemaître, who represents the archetypal swindler and opportunist. In this scene, Macaire is depicted in a courtroom, gesturing with theatrical exaggeration while holding a legal document. His posture and facial expression suggest a performance rather than a genuine defence, mocking the perceived corruption and pomposity of the legal system.
Daumier employs a sharp, observational style to capture the atmosphere of the courtroom. The judge and other legal officials are portrayed with grotesque features, reflecting the artist's critical view of judicial authority. The composition focuses on the contrast between the animated, performative lawyer and the stoic, perhaps indifferent, figures of the court. The use of lithography allows for expressive, fluid lines that define the characters' exaggerated forms and the textures of their robes. The hand-colouring adds a layer of depth to the scene, drawing attention to the central action while maintaining the graphic quality of the original print.
As a social commentator, Daumier used his work to expose the hypocrisies of his time. His ability to distill complex social dynamics into a single, humorous, and biting image remains a hallmark of his career. This print is not merely a caricature but a piece of visual journalism that documents the tensions of 19th-century French society. It provides a glimpse into the public perception of the law, where the courtroom often functioned as a stage for vanity and deceit. The work remains a clear example of how graphic art can challenge institutional power through wit and visual irony.
