A quiet, observational watercolour by Eric Ravilious, depicting the interior of a Royal Naval Air Service sick bay in Dundee during the Second World War.
Eric Ravilious produced this work during his tenure as an official war artist for the Admiralty. The scene depicts the interior of a sick bay at the Royal Naval Air Service station in Dundee. Ravilious employs his characteristic watercolour technique, utilising a muted palette and precise, controlled brushwork to capture the quiet atmosphere of the military facility.
The composition is structured around the large, multi-paned window that dominates the rear wall. Through the glass, one observes the calm waters of the harbour, where seaplanes are moored. The inclusion of the White Ensign flying from a mast provides a specific naval context. Inside, the room is sparse, containing only a simple iron bedstead and a wooden chair. The bed is covered with a patterned quilt, which adds a subtle decorative element to the otherwise utilitarian space.
Ravilious had a particular interest in the intersection of domesticity and military life. His work often focuses on the overlooked corners of wartime service, finding visual interest in the mundane aspects of naval infrastructure. The light in this piece is soft and diffused, typical of the Scottish coastal climate, which the artist renders with careful layering of washes. The perspective is flattened, a common trait in his work, which emphasises the graphic quality of the architectural elements and the rhythmic repetition of the window frames.
This print captures the stillness of a moment away from the front lines. It reflects the artist's ability to document the realities of the Second World War through a lens of observation rather than overt drama. The work remains a significant example of British twentieth-century watercolour painting, demonstrating the technical skill and observational clarity that defined the career of Ravilious before his untimely death in 1942.
