A traditional Japanese ink wash painting by Kano Motonobu, depicting a serene river scene with mountains and mist.
Kano Motonobu, a central figure in the development of the Kano school, produced this ink wash painting during the Muromachi period. The work follows the tradition of Chinese-influenced ink painting, known as suibokuga, which prioritises the use of monochromatic ink tones to suggest depth and atmosphere. The composition is structured through a series of receding planes, guiding the eye from the foreground rocks and structures toward the distant, mist-shrouded mountains.
Technically, the painting employs varying ink densities to create a sense of space. The foreground features sharper, more defined brushwork, while the background elements dissolve into lighter, wash-based forms. This technique mimics the natural obscuration caused by evening mist or atmospheric haze. Small human figures, such as those in the boat on the water, provide a sense of scale and suggest a quiet, lived-in environment. The Kano school style, as refined by Motonobu, often combined the bold, expressive brushwork of the Zen-influenced ink tradition with a more structured, decorative approach that appealed to the samurai class and the imperial court.
This piece reflects the aesthetic values of the era, where the depiction of nature served as a meditative subject. The absence of heavy colour allows the viewer to focus on the interplay of light and shadow, as well as the economy of the brushstrokes. The surrounding decorative border, while not part of the original painting, is typical of the mounting styles used for hanging scrolls in Japan. The work remains a representative example of the transition toward the more formalised, professional painting styles that would dominate Japanese art for centuries.
