Gustave Loiseau, a contemporary of the later Impressionists, focused his practice on the rural scenery of France. This work captures a quiet stretch of a river in Normandy, a region that provided him with endless subjects throughout his career. The composition relies on the interplay between the dense, dark foliage of the trees on the right and the reflective surface of the water.
Loiseau employed a technique known as 'en treillis' or cross-hatching, which is visible in the application of paint across the canvas. This method creates a textured surface that breaks down light into small, distinct strokes. The palette consists of deep greens, earthy browns, and cool blues, which effectively convey the atmosphere of a summer day by the water. The sky, partially obscured by clouds, provides a soft light that illuminates the riverbank.
Unlike his predecessors who often sought to capture fleeting moments of modern life, Loiseau preferred the stillness of the French countryside. His work maintains a consistent focus on the changing seasons and the specific light conditions of the northern French provinces. The trees, rendered with heavy, rhythmic brushwork, anchor the scene, while the water acts as a mirror for the sky and the surrounding vegetation.
