An allegorical engraving by Zacharias Dolendo depicting Wealth, rendered in the distinctive style of Northern Mannerism.
This engraving, titled Rijkdom (Wealth), is a characteristic example of Northern Mannerist printmaking. Executed by Zacharias Dolendo after a design by Jacques de Gheyn II, the work functions as an allegory of material abundance and its inherent instability. The central figure, representing Wealth, stands with a regal posture, holding a sceptre and a purse of coins. Her attire is rendered with the elongated proportions and complex drapery typical of the period, reflecting the stylistic preferences of the late sixteenth-century Dutch school.
To her side, a treasure chest overflows with coins, while a large vessel sits nearby, reinforcing the theme of worldly possessions. The background features a modest architectural setting, providing a contrast between the figure's opulence and the surrounding environment. The Latin inscription at the base, attributed to Hugo Grotius, comments on the nature of fortune, noting that while it provides wealth, it remains inconsistent.
The technical execution demonstrates the precision of the burin, with fine hatching used to model the figure's form and the texture of the fabric. The composition is balanced, yet the figure's slight contrapposto and the dramatic sky suggest the tension often found in Mannerist works. This print belongs to a series exploring various allegorical subjects, a popular format for collectors and scholars of the era. The work provides a clear view into the moralising tone of Dutch art during this time, where material success was frequently paired with warnings regarding the fleeting nature of such gains. The print is a fine example of the collaborative nature of print production in the Netherlands, where designers and engravers worked in tandem to produce works for a growing market of art enthusiasts.
