A refined woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu from the series The Five Virtues, depicting two women in a quiet, candlelit interior.
This woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu belongs to the series The Five Virtues, a collection that explores Confucian ideals through the lens of contemporary Edo life. Harunobu is credited with the development of nishiki-e, or brocade prints, which utilised multiple woodblocks to achieve a full colour palette. This technical shift allowed for the subtle gradations and delicate colour schemes seen in this composition.
The scene depicts two women in a quiet interior setting. One woman sits on the floor, reading a book, while the other rests nearby, holding a small object. The composition is balanced by the placement of two candle stands, which provide a soft, directional light. Outside the window, a snowy scene suggests a cold winter evening, providing a contrast to the warmth of the indoor space. The figures are rendered with the slender, graceful proportions characteristic of Harunobu's work, often referred to as doll-like in their refinement.
Harunobu's approach to space is flattened, prioritising the arrangement of shapes and patterns over strict linear perspective. The use of soft, muted tones creates a sense of calm and domesticity. The inclusion of text in the upper right corner provides a thematic anchor, linking the visual narrative to the concept of righteousness. The print demonstrates the artist's ability to blend classical moral themes with the everyday activities of the urban population of Edo. The attention to detail in the clothing patterns and the architectural elements of the room reflects the high level of craftsmanship involved in the production of these prints. This work remains a clear example of the aesthetic priorities of the mid-eighteenth-century Japanese print tradition, focusing on elegance, mood, and the quiet observation of human activity.
