Robert Delaunay produced Rhythm no. 1 in 1934, a period during which he moved away from his earlier figurative subjects to focus entirely on the mechanics of colour and circular form. This work belongs to his later series of abstract compositions, which explore the optical effects of light and movement through geometric arrangements. Delaunay was a primary figure in the development of Orphism, a movement that prioritised the lyrical use of colour over the rigid structures of early Cubism.
