A stark, modernist depiction of soldiers marching to the front, rendered in drypoint with sharp geometric precision.
Christopher Nevinson, a central figure in British modernism, produced this work during his service as an ambulance driver in the First World War. The image depicts a column of soldiers marching towards the front line. Nevinson employs a geometric visual language, influenced by his association with the Vorticist movement and his time in Paris, to convey the mechanical nature of industrialised warfare.
The composition relies on sharp angles and intersecting planes to suggest the rhythmic, almost robotic movement of the troops. By reducing the human form to angular shapes, Nevinson removes individual identity, presenting the soldiers as components of a larger, impersonal machine. The heavy use of cross-hatching and deep shadows creates a sense of oppressive weight, reflecting the grim reality of the conflict. The diagonal lines push the figures forward, creating a relentless momentum that draws the viewer into the scene.
This print is a notable example of how artists of the period adapted avant-garde techniques to document the experience of modern combat. Rather than focusing on traditional heroic portraiture, Nevinson captures the dehumanising effect of the war. The stark contrast between light and dark areas emphasises the harshness of the environment, while the lack of background detail keeps the focus entirely on the marching men. It remains a stark record of the period, demonstrating the artist's ability to synthesise complex emotional states through a rigorous, structured aesthetic. The work is held in several major public collections, including the Imperial War Museum in London, where it is recognised for its technical precision and its unflinching perspective on the realities of the Great War.
