A detailed Baroque engraving by Schelte Adamsz. Bolswert, depicting a mythological scene of hunters and a satyr returning with their spoils.
This engraving by Schelte Adamsz. Bolswert depicts a scene inspired by the compositions of Peter Paul Rubens. The work captures a mythological procession where figures, including a central female hunter and a satyr, carry the spoils of their excursion. The composition is organised to show the interaction between the human and the wild, with the satyr holding a basket of fruit and game, while the female figure carries small birds. The figures are rendered with the muscularity and dynamic movement characteristic of the Flemish Baroque style.
Bolswert was a master of the burin, and his technical skill is evident in the varied textures of the fur, the skin of the figures, and the organic forms of the fruit. The engraving employs a system of hatching and cross-hatching to create volume and depth, allowing the figures to emerge from the background with a sense of physical presence. The Latin inscription at the base provides a classical framing for the scene, connecting the visual narrative to the literary traditions of the period.
As a printmaker, Bolswert played a role in disseminating the visual language of Rubens across Europe. His ability to translate the painterly qualities of oil on canvas into the linear medium of engraving is demonstrated here. The work functions as a study of form and light, focusing on the interplay of shadows across the anatomy of the subjects. The composition is balanced, with the verticality of the spear and the basket providing a structure for the more fluid, rounded forms of the figures. This print offers a view into the seventeenth-century fascination with classical mythology and the allegorical representation of nature and abundance.
