A detailed reproduction of Luca Signorelli's fresco from the Orvieto Cathedral, depicting the anatomical restoration of figures during the resurrection.
The Resurrection of the Flesh is a central component of the fresco cycle within the Chapel of San Brizio in Orvieto Cathedral. Luca Signorelli completed this work during the turn of the sixteenth century. The composition depicts the moment of bodily restoration, where figures emerge from the earth in various states of physical transition. Some individuals appear as skeletons, while others regain their musculature and skin, reflecting the artist's focus on human anatomy and the mechanics of the body.
Above the terrestrial scene, two angels hover against a gold-leaf background. They sound trumpets, signalling the event below. The figures on the ground display a range of poses, from those struggling to rise from the soil to others embracing or observing their own transformation. Signorelli employs a clear, sculptural approach to the human form, using light and shadow to define the contours of the figures. This method creates a sense of volume and physical presence that was characteristic of his work in the late Quattrocento.
The palette remains grounded in earthy tones, which contrast with the luminous gold of the upper register. The architectural framing of the fresco integrates the painting into the physical space of the chapel, creating a dialogue between the viewer and the depicted scene. Signorelli's approach to the subject avoids excessive ornamentation, choosing instead to focus on the anatomical realism of the figures. This work remains a primary example of the artist's ability to combine theological narrative with a rigorous study of the human form, demonstrating his technical control over the fresco medium during the Italian Renaissance.
