A detailed reproduction of Jerg Ratgeb's Resurrection of Christ, a central panel from the Herrenberg Altar depicting the risen Christ amidst startled guards.
This panel, part of the Herrenberg Altar, displays the distinct visual language of Jerg Ratgeb. The composition centres on the figure of Christ, who rises above a rocky outcrop, framed by a luminous circular halo. His posture is elongated, and his expression conveys a sense of detachment from the earthly scene below. The surrounding soldiers are depicted in various states of disarray and shock, their armour and clothing rendered with attention to the fashion of the early sixteenth century.
Ratgeb employs a palette that balances the ethereal light of the central figure with the earthy tones of the rocky terrain and the soldiers' garments. The background features a distant, mountainous view, typical of the period's interest in combining religious narrative with geographic detail. The frame itself is inscribed with Latin text, a common feature in altarpieces of this era, which serves to contextualise the scene within the broader liturgical framework of the time.
Technically, the work demonstrates the artist's ability to manage complex spatial arrangements. The contrast between the static, vertical orientation of the risen Christ and the chaotic, horizontal positions of the guards creates a dynamic tension. The use of light is particularly notable, as it emanates from the central figure to illuminate the surrounding space, rather than relying on a single external source. This approach to lighting enhances the supernatural quality of the event. The Herrenberg Altar remains one of the most significant examples of Ratgeb's output, reflecting the stylistic shifts occurring in German art during the transition from the late Gothic period to the full flowering of the Northern Renaissance. The work is currently housed in the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, where it continues to be studied for its technical execution and its place within the broader history of German religious art.
