A fine seventeenth-century etching by Hans Horions depicting the Holy Family during their flight into Egypt, rendered with delicate, calligraphic lines.
This etching by Hans Horions depicts the Holy Family during their journey to Egypt. The composition centres on the Virgin Mary, who holds the Christ Child, while Saint Joseph sits to the left, his hands clasped in a gesture of contemplation. The scene is populated by a group of putti, who offer fruit and flowers to the infant Jesus, adding a sense of gentle activity to the quiet moment of repose.
Horions employs a delicate, calligraphic line quality characteristic of seventeenth-century Dutch printmaking. The figures are rendered with soft, fluid strokes, and the background is suggested through light hatching, which keeps the focus on the interaction between the figures. The presence of a palm tree on the right side of the composition provides a subtle nod to the traditional iconography associated with the flight into Egypt, grounding the narrative in its biblical context without overwhelming the viewer with excessive detail.
The etching demonstrates a mastery of light and shadow, using the white of the paper to define the forms and create a sense of volume. The arrangement of the figures is balanced, with the verticality of the Virgin and the surrounding putti contrasted against the seated posture of Joseph. This work reflects the period's interest in humanising religious subjects, presenting the Holy Family in a moment of domestic calm rather than grand spectacle. The print captures the technical precision of the era, where the artist's hand remains visible in the fine, rhythmic lines that construct the drapery and the expressions of the figures. It is a quiet, meditative piece that invites close observation of the artist's draftsmanship and the gentle narrative flow.
