A fine mezzotint by James McArdell, capturing a contemplative portrait of an elderly woman reading, based on a Dutch Golden Age original.
This mezzotint by James McArdell reproduces a portrait traditionally identified as Rembrandt van Rijn's mother. McArdell, a Dublin-born engraver who established his career in London, was a master of the mezzotint technique. This method allowed for the creation of soft, tonal gradations, which were ideal for capturing the dramatic chiaroscuro associated with Dutch Golden Age painting.
The print depicts an elderly woman in a dark hood and shawl, her head bowed as she focuses on an open book. The light source illuminates her face and the pages of the book, while the surrounding space recedes into deep shadow. This focus on light and texture demonstrates the technical skill required to translate the painterly qualities of an oil original into the monochrome medium of printmaking. The inscription at the base notes that the work was produced from a painting in the collection of Mr. Edward Scarlett, an optician to the King, which provides insight into the circulation of European art within eighteenth-century British private collections.
McArdell was highly regarded during his lifetime for his ability to replicate the textures of fabric and the subtle expressions of his subjects. His work helped to popularise the styles of Old Masters among the British public, making these images accessible to a wider audience of collectors. This print serves as a fine example of the high standard of reproductive engraving in the mid-eighteenth century, where the engraver acted as a bridge between the original canvas and the print market. The composition remains quiet and contemplative, drawing the viewer into the intimate moment of the subject's reading. The tonal range achieved through the mezzotint process provides a sense of volume and atmosphere that defines the character of the work.
